Structural Calculations Bournemouth
Need calculations for a steel beam, foundation, roof, or retaining wall? We've got you covered.
What We Calculate
A calculation pack needs to answer the practical questions your builder and Building Control will both ask. That usually means working out the following.
- What size beam is needed, and what steel grade
- How much bearing it needs at each end
- Whether padstones are required to spread the load
- Whether the existing wall or foundation can carry it
- Whether the beam needs columns, and what foundations those columns sit on
- How the new structure connects to the existing building
We give you drawings alongside the calculations, so your builder can see exactly where each part belongs.
What We Need From You
For most straightforward jobs, send us the following.
- Existing and proposed drawings
- Clear photographs of the relevant area
- Opening dimensions and wall thicknesses
- Floor and roof spans
- The position of any walls above
- Details of any heavy loads
- Building Control comments, if you have any already
Accurate information keeps things moving. A rough sketch helps, but we need reliable measurements before the calculations can be finished.

Site Visits
Plenty of straightforward jobs can be calculated from good drawings, photographs and measurements alone. We'll recommend a visit in person where any of the following apply.
- The existing structure isn't clear from what you've sent
- The property has visible cracking or movement
- The drawings don't quite match the building
- The beam needs to bear onto old or damaged masonry
- Several past alterations affect the same area
- We can't confirm dimensions safely from photos
We won't pretend a photograph shows something it doesn't.
What You Receive
Your full calculation pack includes the following.
- Structural calculations — the full working behind the design, not just a beam size
- Beam, column and joist sizes — with the steel grade specified
- Bearing and padstone details — how the load spreads safely into the structure either side
- Foundation and connection details — where relevant to your project
- Structural drawings — clear layouts your builder can work from
- Notes for Building Control — everything they need to review and approve the work

Building Control Approval in BCP
Structural calculations support a Building Regulations application, but they don't replace it. BCP Council, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, reviews the structural information, raises any questions, and inspects the work as it happens.
Building Control, not the structural engineer, issues the completion certificate, and that's the document you'll need when you come to sell or remortgage.
Our Process
-
1
Send details.
Drawings, photographs and a short explanation of the project.
-
2
Confirm the scope.
We tell you what's needed, whether a visit is required, and the fixed fee.
-
3
We prepare the calculations.
Working out the loads, the sizes, and how everything connects.
-
4
Pack delivery.
You get clear information for your builder, designer, or Building Control.
Revised Calculations
Tell us if anything changes after we've issued the calculations, the opening width, the beam position, the wall layout, the materials, or any load the beam is carrying.
A beam that worked for the original plan may not work once one of these changes, and it's always cheaper to tell us early than to find out once your builder's already on site.
